Russia Goes Back on Cease Fire

According to the International Herald Tribune, Russia is not pulling back its troops and is controlling the port city of Gori near the capital of Georgia. They briefly allowed Georgian police to enter but were dispelled 3 hours later.

Meanwhile President Bush has sent in troops for a humanitarian mission as to show Russia that the US can still defend its allies in Europe and to challenge Russia’s pledge to allow humanitarian aid be sent into Georgia. Bush has also threatened Russia stating that it is risking its place in “the diplomatic, political, economic and security structures of the 21st century” possibly referring its place among the G8 nations. The US denies that its troops will be defending any of Georgia’s assets but will defend themselves and their assets if the need arises.

Russia has set up a dangerous game of chicken and we’ll see who blinks. Russia has already committed so it’ll be up to us to see if we’re willing to see this through.
