A couple of weeks ago when we got the returns for the new health care bill, I felt physically ill. It was that noxious feeling of dread. I'm sure there was a significant portion of the population that was elated as well but I tend to believe that a lot more felt the way I did versus elation. I've been thinking a long time what the answer to the recent health care bill and the overall runaway spending. According to the New York Times, Obama is on track to triple the national debt to 90% of GDP. ...
Well, actually, it happened after I'd been at my desk for a few minutes. My wife called me and said she thought that we had a virus because we had a bunch of e-mails from one of our accounts with spam in it. Now we have never had a virus before and we have virus software currently installed from McAfee but when I checked our e-mail accounts, it did in fact look like it had come from our e-mail address. Worst, it was also sent to a handful of people that were in our address book. Quickly I ...
Here's my plan to get us out of this mess and into full recovery within 1 year. First, freeze all spending this year. It's nice to announce that you want to freeze spending starting next year on a small fraction of programs but not until you jack up the spending this year first. Freeze spending immediately and show that you are serious about cutting the deficit. All programs across the board. Allow for emergency spending bills that are only for the wars but don't allow anything else to ride on those emergency spending bills. If a ...
Today Reuters put out a story rightly criticizing Obama's new budget for all of it's back-door tax hikes on the middle class. The White House called Reuters and asked them to pull the story because of "inaccuracies" which they promptly did. I found the story in Yahoo! News' cache and I reprint it here for posterity. Enjoy. Backdoor taxes to hit middle class Mon Feb 1, 4:09 PM By Terri Cullen NEW YORK (Reuters.com) --The Obama administration's plan to cut more than $1 trillion from the deficit over the next decade relies heavily on so-called backdoor tax increases that will result ...
Apparently if you oppose Obama and exercise your free speech rights, you're just part of a ruthless mob.
In a round-about way, Ted Nugent has a pretty good definition of an "inalienable right". It's not a right that we derive from the Bill of Rights, it's a right that we have regardless. It's a right we'd have even if we didn't have a constitution that enumerated it.
The Waxman-Markey bill passed in the House of Representatives last week. If you have insomnia, here is the text of the 932 page bill and the 300 page amendment. Steve Milloy, author of the Junk Science blog and Green Hell blog was on Glenn Beck's TV program explaining a little of what we have to look forward to.
I've always heard of the push to create "designer babies", or babies that are genetically pre-screened for traits and only the desirable ones are kept. I was unaware, though, that it was already being done and has been since 2001. A fertility company with branches in several cities in North America is currently offering this very service. You may not know it, but gender selection based on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) has been available to paying couples since at least 2001. One of the world leaders in providing this service is the Fertility Institutes, with branches in Los Angeles, ...
The New York Times has an article stating that the Sierra Club wants Bonneville Power Administration to tear down the dams on the lower snake river to replace them with wind turbines. Apparently Bonneville has already made significant investments in wind turbines but because of the unreliability of using the wind for power generation, it needs other, more stable, power sources to back it up. Bonneville currently uses power from dams as well as natural gas generators for this. With the dismantling of the lower snake river dams, it would put those power requirements on natural gas ...
Joe Biden made a very surprising comment at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire today. He said:
Make no mistake about this, Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Let’s get that straight….
She’s a truly close personal friend and she is qualified to be President of the United States of America, she’s easily qualified to be Vice President of the United States of America and quite frankly it might have been a better pick than me….
She’s first rate. No, I mean that sincerely, she’s first rate. (Source)
I’m really not sure why he would make such a comment. If Biden feels that Hillary would have been the better choice, it begs the question of why didn’t Obama pick Hillary instead. Doesn’t this call into serious question Obama’s judgement which we’ve heard repeatedly is so much more important than experience?
Dick Cheney is in the Ukraine as one of his stops visiting many former soviet republics that are current allies with the US. Apparently the fighting has stopped but the posturing between the Georgia and Russia still continues. The US is still supporting Georgia and has offered $1 billion to aid in reconstruction. A US warship is on its way with supplies to help with the aid.
Cheney told Georgians that the US is committed to protecting that pipeline and for Georgia to join NATO. Medvedev made a statement how he doesn’t care about being in the G8 nor what NATO does. I wonder how far we are before the US and Russia get into a post-Cold War skirmish.
Last night I watched the Republican National Convention mostly to hear Sarah Palin in her first speech as the Vice Presidential candidate. She was preceded by Mit Romney who did a forceful conservative speech, Mike Huckabee, and Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Giuliani’s speech was fantastic. He seemed very at ease and relaxed to be speaking to the thousands of people present. His speech mostly dealt with the differences between Obama and McCain. Here are some classic quotes:
Then he ran for the state legislature – where nearly 130 times he was unable to make a decision yes or no. – It was just too hard – He simply voted “present.”
As Mayor of New York City, I never got a chance to vote “present.” And you know, when you’re President of the United States, you can’t just vote “present.” You must make decisions.
A few years later, he ran for the U.S. Senate. He won and has spent most of his time as a “celebrity senator.” No leadership or major legislation to speak of. His rise is remarkable in its own right – it’s the kind of thing that could happen only in America. But he’s never run a city, never run a state, never run a business.
He’s never had to lead people in crisis.
This is not a personal attack….it’s a statement of fact – Barack Obama has never led anything.
Nothing. Nada
They would have you believe that this election is about ‘change versus more of the same.’ But that’s really a false choice. Because “change” is not a destination … just as “hope” is not a strategy.
Obama was going to take public financing for his campaign, until he didn’t.
Obama was against wiretapping before he voted for it.
When speaking to a pro-Israel group, Obama favored an undivided Jerusalem. Until the very next day when he changed his mind.
I hope for his sake, Joe Biden got that VP thing in writing.
When Russia rolled over Georgia, John McCain knew exactly how to respond.
Having been to that part of the world many times and having developed a clear worldview over many years, John knew where he stood. Within hours, he established a very strong, informed position that let the world know exactly how he’ll respond as President. At exactly the right time, John McCain said, “We’re all Georgians.”
Obama’s first instinct was to create a moral equivalency – that “both sides” should “show restraint.” The same moral equivalency that he has displayed in discussing the Palestinian Authority and the State of Israel.
Later, after discussing it with his 300 foreign policy advisors, he changed his position and suggested that the “the UN Security Council,” could find a solution. Apparently, none of his 300 advisors told him that Russia has a veto on any UN action. Finally Obama put out a statement that looked …well, it looked a lot like John McCain’s.
Here’s some free advice: Sen. Obama, next time just call John McCain.
Sarah Palin, who reportedly wrote her own speech, delivered her remarks expertly and endeared her to all the Republicans there indicated by how often they stood to give their ovations. It’s been reported that Palin wasn’t McCain’s first choice as VP but I think he’s glad he made the choice now. Here are some excerpts from her remarks.
Sometimes even the greatest joys bring challenge.
And children with special needs inspire a special love.
To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters.
I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.
I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except that you have actual responsibilities. I might add that in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.
We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.
And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.
But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.
Politics isn’t just a game of clashing parties and competing interests.
The right reason is to challenge the status quo, to serve the common good, and to leave this nation better than we found it.
And despite fierce opposition from oil company lobbyists, who kind of liked things the way they were, we broke their monopoly on power and resources.
As governor, I insisted on competition and basic fairness to end their control of our state and return it to the people.
I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history.
And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence.
That pipeline, when the last section is laid and its valves are opened, will lead America one step farther away from dependence on dangerous foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart.
We’ve all heard his dramatic speeches before devoted followers.
And there is much to like and admire about our opponent.
But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform – not even in the state senate.
This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word “victory” except when he’s talking about his own campaign. But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed … when the roar of the crowd fades away … when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot – what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger … take more of your money … give you more orders from Washington … and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. America needs more energy … our opponent is against producing it.
Victory in Iraq is finally in sight … he wants to forfeit.
Terrorist states are seeking new-clear weapons without delay … he wants to meet them without preconditions.
Al Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America … he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights? Government is too big … he wants to grow it.
Congress spends too much … he promises more.
Taxes are too high … he wants to raise them. His tax increases are the fine print in his economic plan, and let me be specific.
The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes … raise payroll taxes … raise investment income taxes … raise the death tax … raise business taxes … and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars. My sister Heather and her husband have just built a service station that’s now opened for business – like millions of others who run small businesses.
How are they going to be any better off if taxes go up? Or maybe you’re trying to keep your job at a plant in Michigan or Ohio … or create jobs with clean coal from Pennsylvania or West Virginia … or keep a small farm in the family right here in Minnesota.
How are you going to be better off if our opponent adds a massive tax burden to the American economy? Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election.
What’s not to like about this lady?
Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, was announced as John McCains running mate. This was a huge surprise since most pundits thought it would probably be either Mitt Romney or Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
I believe that McCain is going for a grab of the disenchanted Hillary supporters in the Democratic party. I think McCain waited to view the discontent among Hillary supporters at the Democratic convention. During the Democratic convention, the media coverage stayed firmly on how upset Hillary supporters were. The very next day McCain makes his surprise announcement that he was going to have a woman as his running mate.
Not only is Palin a woman, but she’s a very conservative woman that espouses conservative values above her party. She’s known in Alaska as a reformer that will even take on her party’s leadership when there’s wrong-doing.
Another way this helps McCain is that she is the only person on either ticket that has executive experience. Everybody else has been in the legislature for their whole careers.
This pick helps McCain in every way that he’s weak. I think this was the single decision that will jettison him to the President’s office.
Here’s some information about Sarah Palin:
The NY Times is reporting that the US and Poland have made an agreement to place missile defense installations in Poland even after months of stalled negotiations. Needless to say, Russia wasn’t happy about the news.
Last week, Moscow reacted angrily to the announced deal with Poland, saying that the move would worsen relations with the United States. A senior Russian defense official, Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, suggested that Poland was making itself a target by agreeing to serve as host for the anti-missile system. Such an action “cannot go unpunished,†he said.
This is obviously a direct result of Russia’s recent invasion of Russia.
The fears about a resurgent Russia were codified to some degree in what Polish and American officials characterized as unusual aspects of the final deal, including an obligation on the United States to defend Poland in case of an attack with greater speed than required under NATO.
I believe this is part of the pressure President Bush is putting on Russia to pull out of Georgia and conform to the way nations should behave in this century. It’s kind of a shot across the bow, so to speak. Poland sees this as vital in maintaining their sovereignty and to protect themselves against the expanding Russian influence. They should work to admit the other former Soviet vassal states into NATO as soon as they can to be a deterrent to Russia as well.

Apparently the big Bigfoot news conference on Friday revealed very little. Fox News reports that the finders are assembling their own group of scientists to examine the body but have not made it available to the general public. Many are saying that it merely looks like a Sasquatch costume from TheHorrorDome.com
Reuters UK is reporting that the DNA tests have come back less than promising with one test coming back inconclusive and the other coming back as 96% opossum.
If it were all true, why not just open up all the information to everyone instead of all this secrecy. It’s likely just a hoax.

Russia, now has agreed to pullout in 2 different agreements but, if anything, they seem to be expanding. It mirrors when Hitler would make promises to the international community in order to appease them but then break them in order to further his purposes. The question is whether we learned anything back then that we should be using now.
Reuters reports:
In Moscow, the Russian General Staff told a daily briefing that Russian troops had begun their pullout from the conflict zone, though there was no independent verification of this.
“I can say for certain when the New Year will come but I cannot give an exact date for the withdrawal of our troops from the conflict area yet,” said Col.-General Anatoly Nogovitsyn. “I can only say that we will not be leaving as fast as we came”.
Georgia accused the Kremlin’s forces of blowing up its weapons and ammunition dumps near the western town of Senaki — modernized to NATO standards — as they withdrew.
“They are destroying everything and then pulling out of these places,” Interior Ministry official Shota Utiashvili said. “If they call this a pullout, then I do not understand the meaning of the word.”
They are walking a fine line trying to comply just enough to keep Washington and the EU off their backs so they can further destroy Georgia’s military and help topple their government.
Reuters is further reporting:
In a show of defiance, Medvedev said: “If anyone thinks that they can kill our citizens and escape unpunished, we will never allow this.
“If anyone tries this again, we will come out with a crushing response. We have all the necessary resources, political, economic and military,” a stern-looking Medvedev told World War Two veterans in the Russian city of Kursk.
Apparently Medvedev is creating a precedence that if they want to attack a state, all they’d have to do is declare part of their people Russian citizens and they’ll be able to attack with impunity without any further justification to the international community. I have little doubt that Russia can find pockets of people in any of its former vassal states to give citizenship to and then further its influence in their affairs through threat of attack. Ukraine and the Baltic States know that they’re next on the hit list and so they’ve offered immediate support for Georgia.
Bloomberg is reporting:
The white majority in the U.S. will be outnumbered by Americans of other races by 2042, eight years sooner than previously projected by the Census Bureau.
Ummm. So?
On the bright side, maybe white people will be eligible for affirmative action.

According to the International Herald Tribune, Russia is not pulling back its troops and is controlling the port city of Gori near the capital of Georgia. They briefly allowed Georgian police to enter but were dispelled 3 hours later.
Meanwhile President Bush has sent in troops for a humanitarian mission as to show Russia that the US can still defend its allies in Europe and to challenge Russia’s pledge to allow humanitarian aid be sent into Georgia. Bush has also threatened Russia stating that it is risking its place in “the diplomatic, political, economic and security structures of the 21st century” possibly referring its place among the G8 nations. The US denies that its troops will be defending any of Georgia’s assets but will defend themselves and their assets if the need arises.
Russia has set up a dangerous game of chicken and we’ll see who blinks. Russia has already committed so it’ll be up to us to see if we’re willing to see this through.

Fox News Reports that four men claim to have found a body of a Big Foot creature and that they’d reveal the evidence on Friday. It’ll be interesting if it’s true or just an elaborate hoax.
